WESTFORD (CBS) ? Westford could become the first community in the state to pass its own gun control law. A selectman in the town is proposing a ban on assault weapons, machine guns and high capacity magazines.
The debate on gun restriction was supposed to happen last week at Town Hall, but too many people showed up and the Fire Chief had to shut it down. The town moved the debate to Wednesday night at the Stony Brook Middle School.
The proposed ban is in direct response to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Selectman Robert Jefferies proposed the ban and is hoping to get it on this spring?s Town Meeting plate.
?A law this dramatic really hasn?t been tried anywhere,? said Westford Board of Selectman Chair Kelly Ross. ?I expect the possibilities that there could be legal challenges to such a bylaw and that would strap the town financially.?
Even Westford?s Police Chief has expressed concerns about how the new ban would be enforced, amid conflicts with both state and federal law.
Some believe Westford?s bold move would help grassroots gun control get rolling, sending a symbolic message.
