Shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday, police received a call about a “distraught” and likely armed man who fled his home in Bridgewater.

That man is a former Avon police officer.

Police say a family member convinced 48-year-old Gene Guilbeault to turn himself in at Dunkin Donuts on Page Street.

After speaking with officers, police say Guilbeault started driving at troopers.

Two state troopers fired at the pickup truck but Guilbeault continued to drive at them, ramming the cruiser of another trooper entering the parking lot.

The truck came to a stop and Guilbeault was placed under arrest.

None of the troopers were injured.

Guilbeault was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton, where, under police guard, he was treated for superficial injuries and discharged.

He was eventually transferred to the State Police Barracks in Milton.

On Thursday afternoon, Guilbeault was arraigned on charges including, assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, failure to stop and negligent operation.

There is no word on why Guilbeault allegedly drove at police. However, attorneys at his arraignment say Guilbeault has a history of mental illness and has been on a number of psychiatric medications.
