BOSTON (CBS/AP) – About 300 jobs have reportedly been eliminated in Massachusetts as Hostess Brands Inc. goes out of business.

Hostess, which is based in Irving, Texas, has 13 facilities in the Commonwealth, including four in Worcester, according to the Boston Business Journal.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030′s Doug Cope reports

It will lay off its 18,500 employees nationwide, blaming a strike by a bakers union for crippling its ability to make and deliver products, including Twinkies, Wonder Bread, Ding Dongs and Ho Ho’s.

Products were flying off the shelves at the Hostess store on Eastern Avenue in Malden Friday.

Several workers told WBZ-TV it was their last day with the company.

Some people are scooping up boxes of Twinkies attempting to sell them on line for as much as $500 apiece.

But just because Hostess is going out of business, it doesn?t mean all of their products will be gone forever.

Hostess CEO Greg Rayburn said in an interview that there was no buyer waiting in the wings to rescue the company. But without giving details, he said that there has been interest in some of its 30 brands, which include Dolly Madison and Nature’s Pride snacks.

Experts agreed that it was likely the biggest brands would survive.
