Celtics Schedule Announced

The NBA announced its revised schedule last night and at first look the Celtics have some very intriguing games early on and will be tested heading into the playoffs. The daunted back to back to back only hits the Celtics once which is key since the Celtics aren’t getting any younger. Let’s take a look at the schedule at a monthly basis and some key games.
December
The Celtics open the regular season on the road at New York for what should be an exciting game. It’s year two of the Amare and Melo show and Melo seems to think the Knicks are capable of winning 50 games in the abbreviated season. Two nights later the Celtics go up against the Heat who knocked them out of the playoffs last season. You can be the Celtics will be ready for this one and will want to open the season by sending a message to the Heat that they aren’t going anywhere. They also have the Hornets the very next night and that is interesting because Chris Paul currently plays for the Hornets and there has been a lot of talk about swapping Rondo and others for Paul. Finally after playing their first 3 on the road the Celtics return for their home opener to take on the Pistons on November 30th.
January
16 games are on the schedule for January with 11 of them being in Boston . They open the month with a home and home with the Wizards. January 11th should be a good measuring stick game as they welcome the defending champion Dallas Mavericks. The Mavs won both meetings last year so you can bet the Celtics will be ready to play. A day off and last years Eastern Conference #1 seed the Chicago Bulls come to town for what should be a very hard ticket to come by. Wednesday the 16 marks the return of Kendrick Perkins who is a fan favorite. The Thunder are out to prove that last seasons Western Conference finals appearance was no fluke. They also have a home and home with Orlando and Cleveland as the month closes. There is a lot of speculation that Dwight Howard will be traded so it will be interesting to see if he is still around when the Celtics play them.
February
Some very tough road games jump out at me as I look at the slate of games the Celtics play in the month of February. They have road games against Chicago , Dallas and Oklahoma City all of which are very tough arenas to win in and they also play the Bulls at home and Kobe Bryant and the Lakers come to town on the 9th. A couple of other games to watch is the matchup on the 5th when Memphis comes to town. The Grizzlies proved a lot last season in upsetting the #1 seeded San Antonio Spurs so they can’t be taken lightly this season. I also think the Charlotte Bobcats game on the 7th can be sort of a trap game as the Celtics could be looking ahead to their game with the Lakers.
March
March will be a challenging month as the Celtics will be on the road for the majority of the month. They open with 3 home games and then close the month with 11 out of 14 on the road including an 8 game road trip that starts out west and ends in Philadelphia . The road trip starts in LA where they take on the Lakers and Clippers on back to back nights. That is followed by games at Golden State , Sacramento , Denver , Atlanta and Milwaukee before finishing up in Philadelphia . They end the month with a road game against Kevin Love and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
April
Probably the most crucial month of the season as they Celtics will likely be jockeying for playoff positioning. The schedule makers didn’t really do them any favors as this is easily their toughest month of the season. They open the month with home games against the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs. If that isn’t hard enough they go to Chicago to take on the Bulls right after. A couple winnable games after that 3 game stretch and then its at Miami and at home to host the Hawks. The end of the month doesn’t get any easier as they go to New York , host the Magic, travel to Atlanta and host the Heat before closing out the regular season at home against the Bucks. If you’re counting that’s 3 matchups with one of the favorites in the East the Miami Heat. This could also be a blessing as the Celtics will have plenty of opportunities to distance themselves or catch up against their key competitors in the eastern conference.
All in all the Celtics will play the Lakers and Mavericks twice and they get the Heat and Bulls and Knicks 4 times. This should be a very entertaining year and I look forward to Monday when free agency begins to see who the Celtics are looking to bring in to round out the roster.
